BRCS Firsts – 2012

1. First full year as a 501(c3) non-profit organization.

2. First year we got grants from 2 national organizations – LL Bean/ACA – Darden Community Foundation
Three Old Town canoes.

3. First year we used our own canoes – ACTU grant – One canoe trailer and one 16 foot Mad River.

4. First year we used our own canoe trailer helped by ACTU grant.

5. First time we did the BRCS event when the river was so flooded and it took 4 days. ACTU members participated.
Red Lobster (Darden) associates participated.

6. First year that we had a Youth River Stewardship Award for the youth partcipants - 2012 sponsored by Cox and Son, Inc.

7. First time we had 30 people show up for the NCF BRCS and had a civilian diver swim the river section

8. First time we found a computer in the river. – NCF - BRCS

9. First time we cleaned a river during a family reunion. Martel family – Lower Platte

10. First time we cleaned the Betsie River – With the help of a Scout troop from Lake Ann, TAPC and others.

11. First time we did a coordinated cleanup with the Benzie Conservation District – Betsie - Mike Jones.

12. First time we cleaned the Maple River.

13. First time we cleaned a river exclusively with TU chapter members – Miller Van Winkle – Maple.

14. First time we cleaned the Little Manistee River – Nine Mile to the Weir.

15. First time we cleaned the Main Br Ausable with the AoA club. McMasters to Parmalee

16. First time we cleaned the Main Branch on our own – Wakeley to McMasters – We fished along the way.

17. First time we cleaned the UMR with the KHS ODAC – 2 sections – 612 to Long's – Long's to M72.

18. First time we did a coordinated UMR cleanup with TU (Headwaters) and AoA and other groups. Picnic.

19. First time we used real Marine radios to maintain contact and safety on our cleanups. Worked great!

20. First time we did a cleanup in October. – Main Branch AuSable

21. First time we did a cleanup after a disaster. – BB Dam disaster cleanup to start the process of healing.

22. First time we did a cleanup in November. – Post disaster cleanup.

23. First time we cleaned over 160 miles of rivers in one season with over 250 volunteers.

24. First year the BRCS placed a portable toilet at the Forks Landing for 5 months. - DNR, RR, Union Tnsp

25. First time the BRCS held it's own raffle as a non-profit.

26. First year we have completed 17 river cleanups in one season.

Our two main BRCS events are planned for June 8th with the picnic and raffle and July 5th NCF.
Next year we are hoping to acquire 3 or 4 kayaks, another trailer and some more safety gear.

We plan to clean all the rivers and complete all the projects we did this year plus we plan to participate in a 5 river
cleanup being coordinated by Boyne Mountains Sports – Ethan Winchester (TU guide) – on the Maple, Sturgeon, Bear,
Boyne, and Jordan in one day.

We will also work hard to restore the Boardman to the level of cleanliness that it was before the dam failure and to
encourage others to keep our rivers Clean, Cold and Beautiful.
